The “Lord of the Rings” star was participating in a United Nations press conference during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival when she was asked about her experience as a goodwill ambassador and giving refugee filmmakers a platform.
At the press conference, she made a comment that captured global attention and generated headlines around the world.
“I’m white, I’m privileged, I’m middle class," she said. "I think, you know, one can be accused of having a bit of a white saviour complex, but to be perfectly honest my interaction with the refugees in the field and also in resettled environments has totally changed my perspective on the world.”
Blanchett, a long-time activist for humanitarian issues, expressed her gratitude for the experience and urged others with a platform to engage in “dialogue with these people.”
While Blanchett had good intentions discussing her work with refugees, her claim of being "middle class" shocked viewers.
One X user wrote, “Cate Blanchett is ‘middle class’… and I am a giraffe.”
Cate Blanchett's response to the backlash
In an interview with The Telegraph, Blanchett, 55, was asked about the uproar her remarks caused.
“Oh, did they?” Blanchett answered in response, which the interviewer noted was said “with a disdainful moue”.
Director Guy Maddin, who was completing the interview with Blanchett to promote their film Rumours, stepped in to defend the actor.
“You were using the standard British definition of middle class,” Maddin said. “You’re above the poverty line and below plutocrat.”
Blanchett continued: “And maybe middle class is about outlook.” She added: “But, anyway, I’m sorry if I offended anyone.
