Zoe Saldaña confidently takes on physically demanding roles, from her portrayal of a superhero in Guardians of the Galaxy to a fierce assassin in Colombiana. She dedicates herself fully to her preparation for each film, yet she maintains a firm boundary that she will not cross.
Zoe Saldana asserts she would never alter her weight for a movie role, as she prefers to maintain her body’s happy balance.
In a 2014 interview with Digital Spy, Saldaña expressed her aversion to the idea of drastically altering her body for a character.
I don’t like to f**k with my body like that. I think it’s marvellous when actors do, but I know I don’t have it in me to not eat, or to over-eat. I would rather shoot myself in the foot.”
The brunette beauty also has admiration for actors like Christian Bale and Jared Leto who can change their bodies to suit a role and snap straight back into shape after the job has wrapped up.
“I really admire actors like Christian Bale and Jared Leto who go up and down, but they’re gifted, and once they’re done with that movie they go back and look like who they are. I don’t think that would happen to me.”
Saldaña focuses on her body’s natural balance and chooses a sustainable way to stay healthy. With regard to Bale, his physical transformation throughout the years has been astonishing, but he knows that his workout routine has affected his body. Bale remarked ( Men’s Health):
“I’ve become a little bit more boring now because I’m older and I feel like if I keep doing what I’ve done in the past I’m going to die. So, I’d prefer not to die. I can’t keep doing it. I really can’t. My mortality is staring me in the face.”
Christian Bale lost over 60 pounds for his role in The Machinist by eating very little for four months. Jared Leto also lost weight to play an HIV-positive transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club, a performance that won him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Zoe reveals how she stays in shape
Zoe Saldaña prefers not to bulk up or lose weight for roles, but she believes in staying fit. In an interview with Shape (via WUSA 9), she mentioned that eating clean and playing with her kids gives her enough exercise.
"I can't work out regularly, so I compensate by eating a lot healthier than I might otherwise," Saldana said. "Once you have relatively healthy eating habits, your workout can become playing with your kids, strolling around the neighborhood, playing airplane, or just changing diapers."
The 46-year-old actress emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and explained why she does not concern herself with fitting a specific body image.
"If we could design ourselves, we'd all be perfect. But we can't, so why be unhappy about it?" she shared. "I've never wanted different hair or my body any other shape. And I've never thought of a person as ugly unless they opened their mouth and their heart was full of venom."
