One of the biggest sporting events of the year is the Super Bowl. While football fans around the world watch to see how the NFL season will conclude, millions of people tune in to watch the Super Bowl halftime show. Here are 7 interesting facts about the Super bowl halftime show.

1. The NFL sued Rapper M.I.A. for $16.6 million in 2014, for briefly giving the middle finger on air.

“The lawsuit was so ridiculous, it proposed that they would keep 100 percent of my earnings for the rest of my life if I ever earned more than 2 million dollars. Jay-Z was, like, ‘You should sign that shit’ and I was, like, ‘No.’” M.I.A. said of the Super Bowl and its aftermath.

Both sides settled the lawsuit later in 2014 for an unknown amount of money.

2. Janet Jackson’s infamous 2004 ‘wardrobe malfunction’ was one of the most-viewed, most-searched-for, and most-talked-about moments in the history of the internet.

The Wardrobe Malfunction (also known as Nipplegate) occurred on February 1, 2004, during the Super Bowl 38 halftime show live on CBS.

While performing a duet with Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake pulled off part of Jackson’s outfit, and, for a fraction of a second, revealed Jackson’s bare breast, covered only by a nipple shield in front of a TV audience of 140 million viewers, many left wondering about what had just happened.

Jackson bore the brunt of the public fallout, and Timberlake returned to headline the halftime show in 2018.

3.. Gloria Estefan was the first artist to hit the Super Bowl stage three times.

In 1992, she performed in a Winter Olympics salute with figure skaters Dorothy Hamill and Brian Boitano; in 1995, she hit the stage with Miami Sound Machine as part of Disney’s Indiana Jones-themed halftime; and in 1999, she represented for “salsa” in a “Celebration of Soul, Salsa & Swing” alongside Stevie WonderBig Bad Voodoo Daddy and Savion Glover.

4. Diana Ross sang the most songs

Only Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and Paul McCartney have taken the halftime stage entirely by themselves, without a band or special guest performers. The difference? McCartney performed four songs and Jackson did five, while Ross performed a medley of ten hits. By contrast, Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz, and Missy Elliott performed nine songs between them in 2015.

5. Katy Perry holds the crown of the highest-rated halftime show, while J.Lo and Shakira has the most-streamed halftime show on YouTube.

Katy drew an astounding 118.5 million viewers during the live broadcast in 2015. J.Lo and Shakira has the most-streamed halftime show on YouTube with over 225 million views.

6. Super Bowl ads are extremely expensive, thanks to the audience the event draws.

The reason? There are a ton of eyeballs on the Super Bowl every year, and advertisers are eager to capitalize.

As of 2020, a 30-second Super Bowl ad cost $5.6 million. In comparison, ads at the first game in 1967 went for about $40,000.

7. The NFL does not pay bands or artists to perform at the halftime show.

Instead, they get production expenses covered and enjoy a boost in record sales and media buzz.(Over 100 million people watch the halftime show every year.)

When Justin Timberlake performed in 2018, his music sales rose 534% that same day; as for Lady Gaga, sales of her digital catalog spiked 1000% following her 2017 performance.

According to the New York Times, the NFL doesn’t pay artists an “appearance fee.” But the organization does cover all expenses for the performance as well as the cost of things like lighting, bodyguards, and stagehands.
