I Am Legend was the latest adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel and follows Robert Neville (Smith), one of the very few survivors of a massive, deadly pandemic that killed most people and turned many others into vampire-like mutants.

The film was a big hit at the box office in 2007 grossing over $580 million worldwide, and now after 15 years, it seems the long-awaited sequel is finally happening as Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan are set to star in I Am Legend 2 according to Deadline.

According to Screenrant, Will Smith initially had no intention of revisiting an I Am Legend sequel before hearing Michael B. Jordan’s pitch.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Smith says that Jordan was part of the pitch for I Am Legend 2, saying, “The idea came up. I can’t talk about it yet. But it’s a really, really cool concept and [Michael B. Jordan] was a part of creating the idea.” The actor went on to say that he had no intention of ever making a sequel to the film, something that the studio had been keen on trying to make happen ever since the first one performed so well. “It was one of those ones I was gonna leave alone, and then I heard the idea,” said Smith, noting to himself after hearing it,“‘But that might work. I think we can do that.’”

Further details are currently under wraps. While no director is attached yet, Oscar-winning writer Akiva Goldsman, who adapted the Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel for the original 2007 movie, is on board to pen the follow-up as well.
