After dating for two years, Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes called it quits in November 2021.

In March 2022, Cabello released a new collaboration with Ed Sheeran called “Bam Bam” and fans are convinced that it takes a dig at her former lover.

Bam Bam” is the lead single off Cabello’s upcoming album Familia, due out later this year.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Camila opened up about the song.

“The song was inspired by an idea that I had…a lot of the music I listened to growing up, a lot of Latin music I listened to growing up, and in Latin music, there are a lot of songs that almost carries within it like a life lesson. So I wanted to make a song like that with English words, and I feel like the lesson in this, which I feel like, the lesson I’m learning as I’m growing up is that life has its cycles, you know? I was in a long relationship that was amazing, but things change and things end and different things begin again and I feel like this song just kind of reflect that cycle of love, that you’re like you’re in love and then you’re out of love and then it hurts, just and then, you know what I mean? And just kind of like keeping your head through that and trying to savor what it is to be human and have things change.”

The singer also opened up to Zane Lowe about how her priorities have changed throughout her life and how her focus really is on how to be a well-rounded person.

“My priorities have fluctuated and my focus has changed throughout my life. Those years that we were dating, I don’t even feel like, even while I was writing this album, and even still now, I guess, my focus really is on, how can I be a well-rounded person?” Cabello said. “And apart from my career, my focus wasn’t even on my career. This album literally was a tool of me becoming a more well-rounded person and acquiring intimacy with my collaborators. That was my number one intention, was not even, how do I make the best album and the best music? My number one intention was, how can I just make music with people that I want to f***ing have dinner with afterwards? How can me talking about these things help me build trust with people? How can I talk about the icky things that I haven’t talked about with anybody and then get it to a place where these people, because they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, I totally relate,’ can validate my own experience?”

She also added, “I’m okay…I’m good and I
feel like I’m at a place where I don’t need things to be perfect to enjoy my life and that’s actually what the song is about too, it like you don’t need things to be perfect to give yourself, those moments of joy on the dance floor and in your life in general.”
